What Are COB and SMD?

Before comparing, let’s understand what each technology actually is.

What Is SMD LED?

SMD (Surface Mounted Device) is the traditional LED strip we all know. It features individual LED dots arranged in a row on a PCB board — each dot is clearly visible to the naked eye.

Common model names include SMD 2835, SMD 5050, and SMD 3528. The numbers indicate the chip size (e.g. 2835 = 2.8 mm × 3.5 mm).

What Is COB LED?

COB (Chip on Board) is a newer technology that mounts a high density of LED chips directly onto the PCB, then coats them in phosphor resin. The result is uniform, seamless light — you can’t see individual LED dots.

COB LED is rapidly gaining popularity because its light quality is noticeably superior to traditional SMD strips.

COB LED vs SMD LED — Head-to-Head Comparison

1. Light Quality

SMD LED:

  • Individual LED dots are clearly visible
  • Dark gaps exist between each LED
  • At close viewing distances, the dotted pattern is obvious unless a diffuser covers it

COB LED:

  • Light is uniform and seamless — no visible dots
  • No dark gaps between LEDs
  • Looks like continuous natural light even at close range

Winner: COB LED — noticeably better light quality, especially in visible installations.

2. LED Density

SMD LED:

  • Typically 30–120 LEDs per metre
  • More LEDs means more even light, but dots are still visible

COB LED:

Winner: COB LED — far denser LED placement delivers smoother, more even light.

3. Flexibility and Bending

SMD LED:

  • Can be bent, but care is needed to avoid dislodging LEDs
  • Some models are too stiff for tight curves

COB LED:

  • Excellent flexibility — chips are embedded in resin
  • Bends smoothly around curves and shapes without damage
  • Speciality models like the Side View COB Strip Light emit light sideways, ideal for curved installations

Winner: COB LED — more flexible, easier to work with for complex shapes.

4. Heat

SMD LED:

  • Heat is concentrated at each individual LED dot
  • Each individual chip runs hotter

COB LED:

  • Heat is distributed evenly across the PCB surface
  • Each point runs cooler, though total heat may be higher due to LED density
  • Always recommended to pair with an Aluminum Profile for heat dissipation

Draw — both types benefit significantly from using an aluminium profile channel.

5. Price

SMD LED:

  • Lower price — older, more established technology
  • Good for budget-constrained projects

COB LED:

  • Roughly 20–50% more expensive than SMD
  • But the light quality improvement is substantial — better value over the long term

Winner: SMD LED — cheaper upfront. But COB wins on quality-to-price ratio.

6. Maintenance and Durability

SMD LED:

  • A single failed LED creates a visible dark dot
  • Requires replacing the entire affected section

COB LED:

  • A single failed LED is nearly undetectable due to the high LED density
  • Longer effective service life in practice

Winner: COB LED — more resilient in day-to-day use.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose SMD LED if:

  • You have a tight budget
  • The strip will be hidden (inside a channel, cabinet, or behind a diffuser)
  • You already have an SMD-compatible diffuser that softens the dot pattern

Choose COB LED if:

  • You want the best light quality
  • The strip will be visible (cove lighting, behind a TV, on shelving)
  • You need uniform, dot-free light
  • You need to bend the strip around curves
  • You want a result that looks high-end and professional

ArumStores’ Recommendation

For home and commercial decoration in 2025, we recommend COB LED as the primary choice because:

  • Light quality is noticeably better
  • The price difference is modest compared to the quality gain
  • It is the emerging new standard, gradually replacing SMD across the industry
